The ORIGINAL Reebok Classic

First in a series of posts showcasing the fantastic reference material sent to me by collector Dave Gumbley, is the original 1983 Reebok Classic. Let me repeat myself: the ORIGINAL Reebok Classic. This was – I believe – the pre-cursor to the legendary Classic Leather (also released in 83), and shares familiar details such as the sole design, here identified as the Roadstar outsole. I’m also loving the running track graphics on the bottom right, which reinforces the sidestripes design inspiration (notwithstanding Onitsuka Tigers‘ similiar sidestripes seen decades before).

As the advert above curiously shows the shoes in black & white, here’s a teaser catalogue image showing it in full colour. It’s a mystery as to why this shoe has disappeared into history, while it’s Leather namesake has done rather well for itself – perhaps the marketable difference between a real running shoe, and a casual/lifestyle/’terrace’ shoe. Huge thanks to Dave for sending this material to Retrobok 😀 More shortly! ~BokOne
